Just Because: iPhoneography!

Some of you may know that in addition to my website, I also have a Flickr gallery of photographs I create with my iPhone.

I totally love using my phone to make photos of whatever catches my eye. It usually happens during the most mundane moments - walking to the store, or even the bathroom (hey, it's happened) or just waiting in line somewhere...you know, you're not completely focused on some task or other. These photos are never planned - which is why I enjoy making them so much...it's kind of like when you were a kid with your first camera and everything looked new and different.

I edit all the iPhone pix right in the camera (I mean the phone) using photo apps for the phone only - that's the only rule I've got - no computer editing allowed because I think it would take away from the spirit of the experience. With the phone, I can photograph and edit on the fly and upload the images right away. It's amazing what can be created and done right within the same device. Often I'll use 3 or even 4 different apps to create the final image and since I'm not concerned about image print quality the way I am with the so-called "serious" photography, the sky's the limit!

For the above photo I think I used Photoshop Express, Tiffen's Colour FX, Tilt Shift Gen and Chase Jarvis' The Best Camera app. I don't know exactly, because I don't keep track. The subject is the MacDougall Memorial Church near Morley, Alberta.

iPhone photography is so popular it wouldn't surprise me if it eventually becomes more than just a "subculture" of photography, but a genre in its own right, much like use of the Holga camera and Lomography has become. For me, it's a great way to exercise my eye and keep on shooting and creating while I'm busy doing non-photo stuff.

Granville Island Day Vendors Association

I'm a member of the "Granville Island Day Vendors Association", which is comprised of those of us artists, craftspeople and artisan food makers who are juried vendors at the Granville Island Public Market in Vancouver, British Columbia. All the vendors who sell within the Market have to go through a stringent jury process every two years and only high quality work gets in.

I just wanted to let everyone know that our Association just launched a kickin' new website! There you'll find info about not only our organization, but photographs, events and information posted by the vendors themselves.

If you want to know more about who and what you'll find amongst the vendors in the Public Market, be sure to click on the image or the links. Oh, and if you're trying to find out how to become a vendor in the Market, don't ask me - ask these guys.

Just set up today with a selection of photo goodies at the Seymour Art Gallery's Annual Winter Gift Gallery! Located in the lovely and peaceful village of Deep Cove, in North Vancouver, this special event runs from November 29, 2011 - January 8, 2012 and features all sorts of wonderful and affordable artworks, jewellery and gifts from local artists.

I have on sale my photographs in the form of pendants, ceramic tiles and small wall art - perfect treats for you, your home or a friend!

During the month of October, I am one of two featured artists at Bird on a Wire Creations Gift Gallery (recently voted one of the top three places in Vancouver to buy local handmade, sustainable goods in the Best Of issue of the Georgia Straight) along with Karen Yaremkewich of Endure Upcycled Designs! There will be an opening reception from 7-9:30pm on October 6 complete with musical entertainment by Genevieve Antanina, refreshments and snacks! Click on the image below to get your copy of the Evite for the event.

I will have a series new work on display at the store, very, very loosely based on a theme of Fall and all the pieces are mounted on wood board. The shop also carries my images on ceramic tile and pendants too.

Granville Island Table Setup

The current incarnation of the table at The Granville Island Public Market. I've made it more "intimate" than its previous version. Somehow still manage to get frames, cards, prints AND tiles on it though!

Hoping to at least double the number of images I'm offering up on tile by the end of the summer, if all goes well. Looks like something's going to have to go!

Just recently returned from a fabulous workshop on Salt Spring Island, BC with photographer & artist Amy Melious (see her work at www.grainofsand.com - incredibly beautiful imagery). I've been smitten with Amy's work ever since I first encountered her imagery at an art fair a few years ago and was tickled pink to be able to partake in her workshop. She is an amazing teacher and a true inspiration.

At Amy's workshop I learned further techniques for painting on my photographs using pastels and acrylic paint. The photograph above, which is a work print and not yet complete, is an small example of how the beauty of the underlying image can be further given your own voice through additional hand work on the print. Soft pastels were used on this image - my first ever attempt at working with this media. If you look back at my ceramic tile post, you can see how different the image really looks!

The possibilities are totally endless and I hope to incorporate much more handwork into my images as part of new directions with my photographs.

This was also my first ever trip to Salt Spring Island and I loved it! All ready to pack up and move - what a vibrant and lovely place. Can't wait to go back.

Made the Cut

Just wanted to announce that one of my new resin over wood art pieces "through a dark forest" has been accepted for West Vancouver, BC's 2011 Harmony Arts Festival Group Show taking place July 29-August 6. My piece will be displayed at the Silk Purse Gallery (1570 Argyle Ave.) during the festival.

"through a dark forest" is a mixed media piece incorporating my original photograph mounted over a painted metallic surface, imparting a 3-dimensional silver-like quality to the image. This is further enhanced by a thick coating of clear resin over the top and sides of the piece. The finished work measures 10"Hx30"W and is divided in to 3 10"x10" panels.

The Harmony Arts Festival is a great community event with high quality entertainment, fabulous art and fine craft. Best of all, it's free so come check it out!

New Birdy Images on Ceramic Tile

I've always thought of crows as having really interesting secret lives, probably not, but one never knows. I like the idea of their silhouetted forms obscuring their shadowy selves. These three new images, in these versions, are currently available on ceramic tiles, and uh, the titles are still a work in progress!

These pieces feature my image atop lovely antique silver plated bezels, embellished with natural stone beads for a vintage-inspired look. As with the tiles mentioned in my previous post, there's lots more to come!

New Photos and New Product: Photo Tiles!

After a VERY extended absence from selling my work at local Markets last year - I'm finally back. 2010 saw me put my own business on hold for a bit and take an unplanned detour running a gift store & gallery (in the Net Loft building on Granville Island in Vancouver, BC) featuring the work of artists and artisans who sell within the Public Market on Granville Island. That's all done now and I'm approaching my business with new eyes and lots of ideas for how to present my imagery.

First up is a slight shift towards a lighter colour palette throughout some my work. The darker more saturated work will still be finding its way in, but I also have a real attraction to paler, more minimal images too and will be making some deliberate choices towards changing it up with some paler, more muted tones. Always good to keep it fresh!

I'm also very pleased to announce that I have a brand new product - images on 4" ceramic tiles! The images are embedded in to the tile's surface using a heat transfer process. My tiles are backed with cork to protect your tabletops when used as coasters or they can be easily displayed using a small easel or adhesive hanger, making a lovely complement to your home. They're lightweight and are a fab gift! Currently priced at $9.95 each or $8.95 for 3 or more.

The Photo Tiles are available now on my table at the Granville Island Public Market, April 14-17, April 28-May 1 and May 6-8.

"Dog Days of Summer"

A wide angle shot of a frolicking dog's paw prints in the sand. Cropped and the colour reworked to be reminiscent of those old slightly faded, colour shifted photos you find laying around in a drawer one day. You know, the kind of photo you come across while doing a little cleaning up and then you blow the whole afternoon looking at old family pix, thinking of some carefree summer long gone by...

This one's taken at Long Beach in Pacific Rim National Park on Vancouver Island, BC.

Granville Island Market Dates for March!

My photographs and I are braving Granville Island during the Olympics! Don't be afraid - there's tons of real cool and free stuff to do on Granville Island during February! Make it easy on yourself and check out the little dedicated tram from the Olympic Skytrain station - it's very efficient and a great way to get to the Island. I'd love it if we could keep it forever, but alas it looks like it's going away after March unless the City can find a big bucket of cash...

I've got the new Ocean Jewels series up and ready to go as 6x6 canvasses and the brand new "alder" image as a 12x36 canvas too! It's very exciting to put out new work - looking forward to sharing it with you all.

Finally, something new for 2010!

"Version 1" because there were so many possibilities with this image, I may do a different version in the future. These are the Alder trees that grow along on the cliff below the approach to Lynn Valley Headwaters Park, in North Vancouver, BC. It was spring, which would normally speak of all things pink and pretty, but I just loved the spare, repeating patterns this stand of bare trees made. A forest is such a complex thing, with its own personality, the trees with many aspects to share.

I will now be at the Granville Island Public Market on December 24th - Christmas Eve. The Market is open until only 4pm that day, so please come on down early for any last minute goodies! If you've done all your shopping and are more in the mood for giving, please consider donating to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. The Granville Island Day Vendors (that's all of us vendors at tables throughout the Market) have a Food Bank donation station just inside the entrance to the Market. Let's help make it a great Christmas for everyone!

More texture-y stuff - the "Queen Anne's Lace" series!

More sets, more triptychs and lots more texture! I've had these dried Queen Anne's Lace stems sitting around the house since last spring. I loved the way they seem to glow from within when the sun shined on them and finally decided to photograph them using diffused natural window light. They seem to have a "look at me" vibe all the while appearing rather demure. Can be had from my Etsy shop or find my at the Granville Island Public Market in Vancouver, BC.

New work - Antique Lavender Series

High time to post some new work methinks! Recently I decided it was time to really embrace some of the looks I really love and lately that's been texture, texture, texture! A friend was kind enough to gift me with some lovely lavender from her garden and lavender is something I always associate things of the past - parlours, lace and such. When contemplating photographing this lavender I knew I wanted to create something that reminded me of such times -- so I've married up the lovely lavender with some of my own photos of distressed textures found around the house. Kind of faded, kind of old, yet well suited to the contemporary dwelling! I'm offering these images up as both prints (check 'em out in my Etsy shop) and mounted on deep wood panels (special order). Hope you like them.

Back in May, I announced my new series of images titled "Florentine". I've just released three more images for the collection:

"sweet pluots"

Mangosteens are a luscious delicacy originating from South East Asia. Apparently Queen Victoria thought they were quite tasty. As for the Pluot, it's an apricot and a plum in one, with more plum-like leanings. I happen to know they're all magically delicious - I get to eat my foody-props once the photos are done!

At the markets, I have the entire Florentine series on cute little 4x6 canvases. They're ready to hang as-is - all you need is a push-pin, no fancy framing required. They're only $25 each and each one is personally prepared by moi.

Buy one to start off a collection, or buy 'em all to cover a wall!

Well it's break time - at least from my table at the Markets. Time to make more prints and cards, and since the weather's super nice right now, get outside and create some new images. I was suspecting I might be slowly turning into a vampire since I hadn't seen the sun in soooo long!

If you haven't been yet, do check out the Harmony Arts Festival in West Vancouver this and next weekend. Music, art, craft, theatre, sun, ocean breezes and a great atmosphere. Best of all it's FREE! I have several friends selling lots of FAB STUFF in the craft market and if you missed my earlier posts below, I've got 3 pieces hanging in the Festival's Group Gallery Exhibits. Totally worth the jaunt over the bridge to the North Shore!

Next set of Granville Island Market dates have been booked, and they are:

I'm very pleased to announce that I will have the images below included in the upcoming Group Show Gallery Exhibits in West Vancouver's Harmony Arts Festival! (July 31-August 9, 2009) These images are a different kind of imagery from what I have shown to date and represent an evolution in my work. Flowers and pretty things will always be favorite subject matter for me, but this darker work has been knock, knock, knocking at the door - it wants out and won't take no for an answer.

I will have two pieces hanging (and for sale!) in the On the Rise Artist Collective Gallery's Art Mart Summer Salon for the month of June. The two pieces I'm hanging are "somnium" a 20x30 photograph in a 30x40 frame and "amissio" a 7x15 photograph in an 18x24 frame.

I titled this image "amissio" - which is Latin for loss. This lady in the garden possessed an air of naivety, yet exuded a certain sadness, appearing to be patiently waiting for someone. When I encountered the gate in this same garden I felt compelled to photograph it immediately. A connection between the two images came much later on.

This type of imagery has been floating around in my head for some time now and will most likely evolve in to a new series. Quite a departure from lovely pink flowers, but hey, it's all part of our experience.

"Florentine" New image series for 2009!

I'm so excited, I've just got started on this new series of images of luscious edibles for your walls! I've started with some lovely pears and apples with plans to expand the line to include old-world-ish fruits and vegetables too. These images were created by marrying up photographs I've shot in the studio, layering them with texture and adding a dark uneven border. They've got subtle old world charm and are well suited to being hung in groups. The first incarnations in this series has been printed up by moi as 4x6 canvases and I've priced them at a reasonable $25 each. They can be hung on the wall as is. They'll be available at shows and markets or you can order them from me directly.

Well, they say if you're in business and you're online then you should be blogging. Welcome to my very first blog post ever. The trick I guess is to keep them coming! I've got a new online shop on Etsy.com, where I'm hoping to reach a wider audience with my work. There will also be work there that I don't necessarily print up for local shows and markets, so please do check it out. New for this spring I've got some pretty pink blossom images - I so do love cherry blossoms. Fortunate am I to live in the Vancouver, BC area where they abound every springtime. This series below is titled "Spring Blush" and is new for Spring 09.
